Piercing Aftercare 101 - which aftercare suits your piercing?

Taking care of your piercing is a must and you probably do it every day. The time of an iodine solution and strong soap is long gone, there are now many more (and better) aftercare products available. Sometimes it is difficult to choose, we understand that. Because which product is the best for your piercing? We will list it for you in this blog post!

Piercing Soap
Suitable for: newly placed, healed or irritated piercings
When to use soap: for the daily cleaning of all your piercings, when necessary.
How to use: Piercing soap is a mild, cleansing soap without perfume. You use piercing soap to keep your piercing and the piercing area clean. This is easiest in the shower. Make sure your hands are already clean, then take a small amount of piercing soap and lather it up. Carefully wash your piercing and the skin around it and rinse well. Gently pat your piercing dry with a clean, lint-free cloth or tissue.

Types of piercing soap: Cleaning gel in a bottle from Easypiercing, Cleaning gel in a tube from TattooMed.

Saline solution
Suitable for: newly placed, healed or irritated piercings
When to use saline solution: for daily cleaning of your piercings.
How to use: Use a saline solution to clean your piercings in a mild, natural way. You can make a saline solution yourself with salt and boiled water, or you can use a spray bottle with ready-made saline solution. It is best to use a homemade saline solution warm, so that crusts can loosen properly and blood circulation is stimulated. This is especially helpful for newly placed or irritated piercings. Soak your piercing in the warm saline solution for a few minutes or spray a generous amount of saline solution on your piercing and let it soak in for a while. Then rinse the piercing with clean water and pat the piercing dry. Read all about making a saline solution in this blog post.

Types of saline solution: mineral salt to make your own saline solution, saline solution in a bottle from Easypiercing.

Piercing Spray
Suitable for: newly placed or irritated piercings
When to use piercing spray: when your piercings are irritated and could use an extra care boost. Follow the instructions on the packaging.
How to use: A piercing spray is a special spray with caring and antibacterial ingredients that help your piercing heal. A piercing spray can be used preventatively, for example after placing a new piercing, or used to remedy irritation that has occurred later. You use the spray on a clean, dry piercing. Spray the piercing and wound area with the piercing spray and let it dry for a while.

Types of piercing spray: Hygienic Solution from Easypiercing, After Piercing spray from TattooMed.

Healing Discs
Suitable for: newly placed, healed or irritated piercings
When to use healing discs: to relieve irritation or pressure from your piercings. How to use: Healing discs are small discs made of high-quality silicone that help prevent and heal irritation. You wear the healing disc over your piercing bar, between the skin and the ball or disc. A healing disc can reduce a tight feeling in newly placed piercings (for example, the back of a labret bar pressing into your lip) or help with piercing bumps that can occur with irritated piercings. Healing discs are often used to reduce cartilage bumps. The soft material distributes the pressure of the piercing jewelry better and allows your piercing to recover. In addition, silicone helps to relieve and heal irritation because it better maintains the moisture balance of your skin. Healing discs can also provide more comfort for piercings that have already healed.

Types of healing discs: silicone Healing Discs from All Over Piercings.

Piercing Oil
Suitable for: healed or irritated piercings
When to use piercing oil: to keep your skin and piercing supple and soft.
How to use: Use piercing oil on a clean, dry piercing. Many piercing oils consist of caring, neutral oils that mainly keep your skin supple. A number of oil mixes are enriched with essential oils and are specifically intended to relieve irritations. Massage neutral oil into the skin around your piercing in small amounts. Piercing oil with essential oils can be added to a warm saline solution or applied to the piercing itself with a clean gauze. Tea Tree oil is usually used diluted, for example by adding it to a saline solution or caring oil.

Types of piercing oil: Jojoba from All Over Piercings, Vitamin E oil from All Over Piercings, Fix Oil Blend from All Over Piercings, 100% pure Tea Tree oil from All Over Piercings.

Piercing Deodorant
Suitable for: healed piercings
When to use piercing deodorant: to care for your piercing and prevent unpleasant odors.
How to use: Use piercing deodorant on a clean, dry piercing. The caring ingredients keep your skin soft, while the essential oils prevent bacterial growth that can cause an unpleasant odor (for example with septum piercings). Contrary to what many people think, such an unpleasant odor can also occur if you wash your piercing regularly. A build-up of skin oils and dead skin cells is often the culprit. If you wash your piercing (too) often and thoroughly, your skin can react to this by producing more skin oils, which can actually contribute to an unpleasant odor. Apply a small amount of piercing deodorant to your piercings every day to keep them fresh and soft. Read more about the development and prevention of piercing funk in this blog post.

Types of piercing deodorant: Piercing Deodorant from All Over Piercings.

Piercing Balm
Suitable for: healed piercings
When to use piercing balm: for extra nourishing care or for stretching.
How to use: Piercing balm is ideal for giving your skin a boost. You apply the balm to a clean, dry piercing and help keep your skin supple and super soft. The balm is greasy enough to also use when stretching your piercings. Apply a small amount of piercing balm to the skin around your piercing, your piercing itself and possibly your stretching tool. The balm will absorb naturally after use.

Types of piercing balm: Earwax Stretch balm from All Over Piercings.

As with so many things, less is more! Do not use too much of the aftercare product and do not immediately scrub your piercing clean 6 times a day, but follow the instructions of the aftercare product. Have you recently had a piercing done and are you unsure whether everything is going well? Then discuss it with your piercer.
